Besan Chela - Indian savoury pancake without eggs

  • 2 cups Besan (gram flour/ chickpea flour)
  • 350 - 400 Ml fresh water
  • 4 chopped red onions
  • Handful of fresh coriander leaves
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • Pinch of Turmeric - optional
  • Salt, black pepper, seasoning per taste
  • Some cooking oil / olive oil

For topping

  • Handful of baby spinach or salad leaves
  • 1 Chopped cucumber
  • 1 Chopped tomato
  • 1 Chopped red /yellow pepper
  • Coriander chutney/ Ketchup


  1. Mix all the ingredients and seasoning. The batter shouldn't be too thick, too watery
  2. Drizzle few drops of oil cooking oil on a heavy bottom pan, pour some batter on the pan, when start having bubbles , dry batter, flip it to the other side, repeat the process, when it turns crispy and cooked, serve it hot.
  3. To make it into a roll - add some chutney of your choice, coriander chutney is preferable , cucumber ,tomato ,red and yellow pepper, little bit of salt as seasoning. Roll it and serve it.
