Spiced Tangy Oats

In my house, we start my mornings with oats, my kids loves to eat it , it’s super healthy and easy to make. The last week has been crazily busy with all the preparation of the festivals and grocery shopping.

There have been a lot of cooking good food and homemade sweets. After ending the famous festival called Diwali, a festival of lights with sweets.

I was craving for some tanginess , spices and yet some healthy breakfast. I knew exactly the taste I was craving for and looked for the ingredients in the house. Voila, I have a new recipe for breakfast. It’s a very simple recipe.

While composing the post, I can still remember the taste of the spiced tangy oats. My Skylander boy reaction was wooow mom, it tastes so good , you are the best mom..for me what could be the best way to start the mornings ..love it 🙂

Tangy Oats

For the recipe

I had prepared the cashew nut milk at home, a straight forward way to make it. Take some cashew nuts (quantity will be mentioned in the recipe below) , soak them in lukewarm water for 2 and half hrs. Water should only cover the cashew nuts , doesn’t require so much of water. After this process, churn it with milk (quantity of milk will be mentioned in the recipe below). The process of churning should take about 4-5 minutes.


Spiced Oats

I have used one of my favourite ingredient which is high in Omega fatty acids , vitamins, minerals , iron called Chai seeds . Use it a lot in my food and recipes. I shall make more recipes for chai seeds. I still have some left over soaked Chia seeds in my refrigerator. They are expensive to buy but worth eating healthy and use in the recipes.


Preparing Chia seeds mixture

Here is the recipe –

Spiced Tangy Oats

For Cashew milk
  • 50 gm Cashew nuts , soaked
  • 150 ml Milk
  • 2 tablespoon Chia seeds
  • Drizzle of Honey
  • Some lukewarm water to cover the cashew nuts for soaking
For the spicy mixture
  • 20 gm Dates - chopped
  • 50 gm Cranberries
  • Half chopped - Any apple
  • 1 inch Ginger - grated
  • 1 Star anise
  • Pinch of Cinnamon powder
  • Pinch of grated Nutmeg powder
  • Pinch of Turmeric powder
  • 100 ml Water
For Oats
  • 2 cups Organic oats
  • 250 ml water
  • Drizzle of Maple syrup
  • Chopped/ round shaped cut apples
  • Pinch of cinnamon powder
Start with making cashew nut milk
  1. Soak the cashew nuts in lukewarm water for 2 and half hours , after this , churn it with milk until the milk becomes creamy and all the cashew nuts are blended well into the milk. Prepare this a night before.

    After the cashew nut milk is ready , add chia seeds and drizzle of honey. Mix well, put it in a container in the refrigerator.

  2. Next day - Take a pan , add water + dates + cranberries + apple + ginger + star anise + cinnamon powder + nutmeg + turmeric powder. Cook it for 5 minutes , close the lid.

    Blend it in the blender , don’t make a sauce , let the small pieces stay , it will add some texture. ( I had taken 1 tablespoon out, didn’t blend it), use it as a topping on the oats, see pictures above. Keep it aside. (Add little bit of lukewarm water to blend if ,its too dry)

  3. Now make oats, pour water in a pan, let it get warm , put oats in it , stir it until it gets cooked , you will see the difference. When it is thick, close the stove.

  4. Now it’s the time to blend all the prepared things -

    Microwave the chia seeds for 30 seconds , it will not make the oats cold.

    Now add chia seeds and prepared spicy mixture into the oats . Pour into your favourite bowl, drizzle some maple syrup , sprinkle the cinnamon powder , put the 1 table spoon of spicy mixture on top of the ready oats , add some apples on it and serve hot.

Recipe Notes

Maple syrup, cinnamon powder and apples could be added more depending on the taste.

It will keep you full for another 2 hours.
