At times I have been a part of few conversations where I have been asked why are you a vegetarian, how do you get taste in your vegetarian food? How do you get your proteins?

Red Kidney Beans Wheels
Vegetarian is not about eating or surviving only on salad. For me it’s an advantage that I come from India and I could find many options, tons of varieties to feed me and make me happy after my meal time.

Preparation in the process
Eating beans is one of the main source of protein for a vegetarian. In India we have so many different dals( lentils) which provide protein.

Served with Mustard Sauce
As a vegetarian it becomes very important to choose the right ingredients for the meal planning. Red kidney beans (Rajma that what we call Red Kidney Beans in India) is the source of protein in this recipe.For the lunch, I felt like making my own broccoli recipe but then I opened the refrigerator and broccoli was not there. I have been down with cold so didn’t want to dress up and take a trip to the supermarket. Instead I had a vision of trying something new and there I created this new recipe.

Looking for the spices in my spice drawer and thinking through..Voila..I had the recipe ready in few minutes. I was only following the vision but rest was decided by the ingredients.

Ready for the shallow fry
- Great recipe for kitty parties which is very common in India.
- Perfect for potluck parties, cut it into half and bring it on the table.
- Lunch box ( reduce the garlic and ginger quantity, if your kid likes it so no problem.

- Get together ;list could be extended, however it totally depends on the event and gathering.

Ready to shallow fry
I was fortunate that I had the whole packet of brown bread at home like 800 gm. Don’t have to use 800 gm for the recipe, cutting the bread with the round cutter will end up leaving quite extra left over. Remaining part of the bread could be used for breadcrumbs for another recipe, I had given them to the birds as I always feel that birds have to really work hard to find the food. I usually offer bread and some food to the birds from the fresh packet.

Crunchy red kidney beans wheels
I had served these delicious red kidney beans vegetarian wheels with ketchup and mustard sauce. It could be served with any of your favourite chutney, sauce , condiments.
Here is the recipe –

- 2 Small red onions - Chopped
- 1 inch - chopped ginger
- 2 Cans Red Kidney Beans - washed and sieve not fully mashed
- 1 big packet of brown bread - used 800 gm
- 6 small boiled potatoes - mashed
- 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
- 1/2 Tablespoon - Garam Masala
- 1 Teaspoon - Concentrated tomato
- 1 Teaspoon - Kasturi Methi { fenugreek leaves}
- 1 Tablespoon - Roasted jeera powder {powder made up of roasted cumin}
- 1 Tablespoon - Crushed Anardana {Pomegranate Powder}
- Handful - Chopped fresh coriander - to add in the mixture
- Salt - per taste
- Cooking Oil for shallow frying
- For the batter
- 1 cup - chick pea powder besan
- 1/2 cup - water few spoons will be used

Start with chopping onions, coriander leaves, ginger.

Now use a potato masher and mash potatoes and red kidney beans(rajma,not fully mashed) .Add all the spices along with ginger garlic paste, chopped coriander leaves and mix it and keep it aside.

For the batter, add chickpea powder, few spoons of water , add some salt, mix it and make it into a smooth batter.

Use the round shaped cutter to cut the bread. Cut the middle part of the bread.

Now make small balls of red kidney mixture and flat it in the middle of your palms, repeat the process for remaining mixture and keep them aside.

Put the pan on the stove with some oil on it.

Place the flat red kidney mixture in between the 2 pieces of bread. Dip it fully into the chickpea batter and now place it in the hot pan, cook it on both the sides, later make it stand in the pan to cook the sides of the wheels and keep rotating it so that it cooks all the way through.
Firstly ,after cutting the bread, place the flat red kidney mixture on the bread to check the diameter of bread and mixture, it fits well. If it doesn't then add more mixture.
Secondly, don't use big size of the cutters, that will be cumbersome to cook and handle.
Lastly, don't stuff the mixture too much.
